Have a Super Summer

Posted May 21, 2015

Get ready for a super summer of heroic proportions. The 2015 summer library theme, “Every Hero Has a Story” celebrates the superhero is all of us.

Kids of all ages will be able to test their reading superpowers with one of the book challenges. Programs for tots, preschoolers, readers, and the Teen Reading Challenge run from May 26 through August 15. You can sign up any time the library is open. Kids keep track of their reading activity in special folders. Those who return the completed folder by August 15 receive a Congratulations Packet of tickets and coupons to local attractions.

Our young crusaders can also enjoy Thursday morning storytimes, the Wednesday Art Cart, and of course, the super popular Terrific Tuesdays. This year’s Tuesday lineup includes magic, music, juggling, tae kwon do, and some creature features with Creepy Crawly Zoo and Kohls’ Wild Theater. Tweens (grades 4 and up) can look forward to Game-a-Palooza, Tinker Labs, and a Minecraft Competition. Teens who dare to be “Unmasked” will experience their own adventurous events.

What would a super summer be without some super special events? Our superheroes in training will have a chance to strut their stuff at our June 25 Superhero Celebration. They can even come in costume if they like. The entire family can get schooled in the ways of the superhero during a special family night Superheroes ABC with author/illustrator Andy Rash. We will also celebrate a local hero of the arts, Mary Nohl, with a visit from Tina and Carson Kugler, authors of the book In Mary’s Garden.

You can also look forward to the return of old favorites. Our annual Red, White & Blue Crafts and Tie-Dye day are back. Pop In & Play, Family Craft Nights, and Lego Club will also continue throughout the summer. Lego Club moves from Thursdays to the second and fourth Mondays of the month, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m..

Of course, if it’s summer it means our library mascot, Leo will be out and about. This summer, Leo will be exploring Shorewood’s super hot spots. Follow his weekly adventures online and enter a drawing for great gift cards.

Don’t miss the party of the summer. The 17th annual Summer Celebration will be held Thursday June 23 from 6 – 8 p.m.. Join us for music, free trolley rides, Culvers’ sundae bar, games, balloons, face painting, and a chance to hang out with the Milwaukee Brewer’s Famous Racing Sausages.

There are plenty of reasons to make the library your hero headquarters this summer. We hope to see you soon.
