Leap Into a New Year of Library Fun!

Posted Jan 8, 2016

Does our wacky weather have you and your kids climbing the walls? Some days are too cold. Some days are too wet. Some days are too icy. Few days are “just right” for winter fun . . . and winter is one day longer this year. No need to dread the first few months of Leap Year. We have plenty of ways to fight off those winter blahs.  Get ready to leap into a new year of library fun!

Our popular on-going programs return – a few with some changes we think you’ll like. Four week sessions of Rhyme & Read Lapsit and Toddler Time start Monday Feb 1. The evening sessions have undergone a makeover to better fit your schedule.  Instead of repeating both sessions at night, we will be offering Rhyme & Read P.M. – Plus More – a hybrid session for little ones, 6 months – 3 years and their special adults. It combines early literacy activities from both the tots and toddler programs. Registration for all three programs begins January 18. Register online, in person, or over the phone. Registration for the Thursday morning PreSchool Story Time is ongoing.

Special Saturdays for families with young children kick off February 12 at 10:30. Warm up with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and some lively music and movement.

We also have events to keep those school kids busy after the bell rings.  Kids can exercise their creativity every week at Wednesday Art Cart. Lego Club, for first grade & up, meets the first and third Thursdays of the month from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Jr. Techies and Tech-wannabes in third grade & up can enjoy STEAM-y fun at our monthly Tinker Lab. Family Fun Craft Nights will also pick up a little STEAM. Monthly projects will include traditional art projects, as well as “maker” activities. Family Fun Craft Nights are held the second Tuesday of the month from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m..

Young readers in grades 1 through 8 can join the Milwaukee Bucks Reading Challenge, starting January 18th. Those who read 250 pages are more can earn a coupon for a ticket to a March Bucks game.

We’ve saved the best for last! Mark your calendars for these super events. Popular author Gordon Korman will visit the Shorewood Library on Thursday February 11 at 6:30 p.m.  We will also honor  all-time favorite author Dr. Seuss during our annual Seuss Celebration. Join us Saturday February 27 from 10:30 – 12:30 for “Seuss-tastical” games, crafts, and snacks.  Last year’s Maker’s Faire was such a huge hit, we will do it again Saturday March 5 from 1 – 3 p.m..

For a complete look at library activities for all ages (yes, we know there are times grownups like to have fun without the kids), check out our Events Calendar.

  Happy New Year!
