Public Libraries - Children Welcome

Posted Apr 16, 2014

April 13 – 19 is National Library Week – a good time for librarians to think about what we do and why we do it. A few years after I started working at the Shorewood Library, a young boy asked me how much a wrecking ball weighed. This was before the time of internet accessible info. I looked in all available resources, but couldn’t find an answer. At one point, I asked him if he needed the information for a school report. I still have a vivid picture of that very disappointed little boy looking down and mumbling, “No, I don’t gotta know. I just really wanna know.” I went through the Yellow Pages, calling Construction/Demolition firms until I had an answer. “It depends on what you’re wrecking.” The weight ranges from 20 pounds to 2000 pounds.

That little boy’s simple comment still serves as a reminder of what the public library does. We are here to help when “you gotta know” and when “you wanna know.” We support lifelong learning whether it’s formal instruction or personal interests. “Cradle to grave” isn’t just an expression here.  It is our mission.

Children aren’t second class citizens or “minor” at the public library. They aren't just tolerated. They are welcomed. Their needs, interests, and ideas are taken seriously. Our collection includes books, movies, music, and online resources for kids of all ages. We also offer programs and activities to help kids of all ages develop their interests. Whether it’s a student working on a homework assignment, a parent looking for potty training help for their toddler, a family wanting to identify a caterpillar they just found, a grandparent looking for ideas to entertain their grandchildren over the weekend, or a young reader looking for that just right chapter book, we are your answer place.

Culver's also loves libraries and children. In celebration of National Library Week, Culvers’ is teaming with libraries to sponsor a drawing contest. Kids, ages 4 – 11, can pick up a special drawing sheet at the library. Then they can create a picture based on a favorite book. When they hand in their picture, they will get a coupon for a free scoop of frozen custard at any Culvers’. They will also be entered in a drawing to win a complete Kids’ Meal. The contest runs through April 19.
