Shorewood Grows Readers . . . and Artists

Posted Jun 30, 2014

You’ve probably seen them at the library or in windows of Shorewood homes. You may even have one at your house. We are talking about our “Shorewood Grows Readers” signs. It seems the perfect slogan for our library. Shorewood’s official symbol is a tree and we’ve been a designated Tree City USA for nearly twenty years. Shorewood has Wisconsin’s first Living Wall edible garden. Anyone who strolls through Shorewood’s neighborhoods can see that green thumbs abound here. That community interest in growth goes beyond flora and fauna. Shorewood Grows Readers as evidenced by the number of residents who visit the library on a regular basis.

We know Shorewood also grows artists so we are giving our young artists a chance to see their artwork on display in the library. This summer we are sponsoring a “Shorewood Grows Readers” art contest. Kids can pick up the outline version of our sign at the library. Just ask at the librarians’ Information desks. Then, they take it home and decorate it in their own unique style.  Entries will be divided into three categories  - Kindergarten through grade 3; Grades 4 – 6; and Grades 7 – 12. All entries will be on display in the Children’s Room.  First place winners in each category will receive a gift card. Their work may also be used in some library displays and promotional materials. The contest runs through August 16. Those of us who aren’t artistically inclined will be able to enjoy the displayed trees through September.
