This Season Give the Gift of Reading

Posted Dec 16, 2014

Are you still trying to find the perfect present for the kids in your life? While making your list and checking it twice, did you include books? Books make ideal gifts . . . no batteries required.

Research shows that children who have books at home are better readers and better students than children without home libraries. When you give a child a book, you are giving more than a physical object.  You are giving them the gift of language, imagination, learning, and enjoyment.

There are so many options to choose from. Time tested classics like Dr. Suess books, Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House on the Prairie series, and E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web are a few of the perennial favorites. If your young reader is a fan of series fiction, look for the most recent title in their current craze.  Poetry collections by Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky can provide hours or word play and silly fun.

Don’t forget non-fiction.  Books will fuel kids’ informational interests, whether it’s dinosaurs, trains, astronomy or Ancient Egypt. How-to books are also sure winners. A budding chef will love one of the many colorful cookbooks available for kids. There are also a variety of books “crafty” kids will appreciate.  A drawing book wrapped with some paper and pencils would be an ideal gift for the young artist or cartoonist.   A volume of magic tricks and a deck of cards or a few coins are sure to thrill a fledgling Houdini. A magazine subscription provides a monthly treat and a year full of reading.
