For many of us, reading is how we stay connected to our world; we see ourselves reflected in books or gain a window into another world. We believe that there should be no barriers to reading for anyone. We try to reach all readers, and have a few special collections to help us do that. Read in the language, format, or style you want!
Graphic Novels
Graphic novels are now mainstream, thanks to big hits like Maus by Art Spiegelman (which one a Pulitzer), American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang (which one a Printz Award for excellence in young adult fiction), and Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant from Roz Chast (a NY Times Notable Book and National Book Critics Circle Award winner in 2014), to name but a few.
To bring our graphic novel collection to the forefront - and allow readers who dig them to find them more easily - we moved them to the front of the Adult Non-fiction section and gave them their own location and call number: Adult Graphic Novels, or GN on the spines of the books. Young Adult Librarian Lisa selects the graphic novels for adults and has added a multitude of hot titles to the collection. Read on, graphic novel fans!
Spanish & other Foreign Language Materials
Read, speak or dream en espanol? Check out our new Spanish language collection for adults, featuring classics and contemporary novels and non-fiction originally published in Spanish.
Spanish language books are just the tip of the iceberg. The Friends of Shorewood Library recently gave us a small grant to create a foreign language section for adults. We started with Spanish, and plan to add several other languages including Mandarin and French. We've long had a Russian language section - mostly made possible by generous book donations from our Russian-speaking patrons. We hope that adding books in other languages will help us serve our community even better!

Large Print, Audiobooks and More
Being visually impaired should not stop you from reading.
Large Print format books are a great way to read with minimal eye strain. Or, read with your ears: audiobooks on CD and Playaway are easy to use for all readers!
Finally, did you know that if you have a visual impairment you can get any book - and many other resources - in audio format from the Wisconsin Talking Book & Braille Library? Stop in and learn more about what they offer, for yourself, a family member or friend.
