Booked All Winter Wrap Up

Posted Mar 18, 2016

A big thank you to everyone who participated in our second annual adult winter reading program- Booked All Winter! This year we had over 375 entries! Here is a taste of what participants read:

Fiction

Claudia B. read:

Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

At first this read seems like a simple story of two people who, after a life time of living in the same small town, are getting to know each other.  It is more complex than that as family with societal expectations and opinions complicate a loving friendship.  I enjoyed this book so much I read it again.

Non-Fiction

Elizabeth L. read:

Bend, Not Break: A Life in Two Worlds by Ping Fu

Autobiography of a Chinese girl growing up in Maoist China who comes to the U.S. knowing only three words of English.  She went on to found Geomagic.  Fascinating!

Graphic Novel

Lisa L. read:

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

A “grown-up” graphic novel.  Highly introspective coming of age memoir, with incredible drawing and frequent (somewhat obscure) literary references.  I also listened to the Broadway cast recording- fascinating to hear how they turned a very visual book into a musical.

Fiction

Ruth Ann G. read:

She Weeps Each Time You’re Born by Quan Barry

Poetic novel of Vietnam’s recent history.  No politics, but a story of an unnaturally gifted person living a remarkable life in an awful time.  Haunting.

Stay tuned for complete book lists!
