Mysteries tend to keep us puzzled year-round, but to celebrate fall we’ve chosen some autumn-themed mysteries to help set the tone for the seasonal chill….

Under a Silent Moon by Elizabeth Haynes

Under a silent autumn moon, two deaths occur.  One was the bloodbath of a beautiful woman on a farm outside of a British small village.  The other was a supposed suicide when the body of another female was found in a car at the bottom of a quarry.  Detective Chief Investigator Louisa Smith a.k.a. “Lou,” is on the case.  When a link is discovered between the two deaths, Lou takes you through six days’ worth of twists and turns.  Read along through police reports, phone messages, and interviews as multiple characters tell their tales in this edgy page-turning thriller.

An Event in Autumn by Henning Mankell

At the twilight of his career, Inspector Kurt Wallander decides to purchase property in the Scandinavian countryside.  However, his work starts all over again when he discovers a shallow grave in the garden.  Hot on what was considered a cold case, Wallander investigates the previous residents, uncovers the history of the house, and scrutinizes the surrounding land, hoping to identify the killer.  Whether you’re meeting Wallander for the first time, or have followed him throughout his career, An Event in Autumn is a short novella that brings insight to it all- crime, suspense, and intrigue.

Destroyer Angel: An Anna Pigeon Novel by Nevada Barr

After a hectic summer fighting wildfires, U.S. Park Services Ranger Anna Pigeon is finally enjoying the great outdoors.  Its autumn, and she, her girlfriends, and their teenage daughters set out to canoe one of northern Minnesota’s pristine national parks.  After camp is set up, Anna heads out on her own, and when she returns, she finds her friends being held captive by violent kidnappers fully equipped with knives, pistols, and rifles.  With no one to call for help, Anna has two days to save her friends before they are flown out of the country, or worse, killed in this psychological fight for survival.

Wicked Autumn: A Max Tudor Novel by G. M. Malliet

Former MI5 agent Max Tudor finds serenity in his new position as the vicar of the cozy English countryside village of Nether Monsklip, but what he hopes will last a lifetime quickly turns into trouble when Wanda Batton-Smythe, the unpopular president of the Women’s Institute, turns up dead.  An accident?  Max doesn’t think so and begins an investigation that stirs up the tangled alliances and animosities of the town.  Chalked full of well-rounded characters, a superbly-imagined setting, and a detailed yet humorous plot, Wicked Autumn is a traditional yet modern thriller that resonates with Agatha Christie’s mysteries.
