From the Friends: Giving that Gives Back

Posted Oct 30, 2017

If you are like me, you can get overwhelmed by the holidays and holiday shopping.  You may worry about spending too much money or not finding the right gift for a special person on your list.  As with so many activities, the library has come up with ways to ease your holiday anxiety with affordable, accessible and meaningful gift options: gifts that give back!

Coffee mugs

In honor of Friends of Library Week in October, the Shorewood Friends ordered pretty coffee mugs featuring the library colors—blue and green. Now available at the main circulation desk, these mugs make great gifts and cost only $10. Proceeds help the Friends support the library; something to think about each time you sip a warm beverage from your new mug.

Tributes

If you read this blog regularly, you will have heard of the new way to recognize or memorialize library lovers at the Shorewood Library.  The Friends have teamed up with the library staff to offer a memorials and tributes program. Through this program, you make a donation to the library in honor of or in memory of a special person. The library then uses your money to purchase a book which is designated by a book plate with your honorees name and a special message to them. You can select either the children’s or adult collection.  A perfect way to honor teachers (you know they love libraries!), friends or relatives, the tribute is also great for grandparents honoring grandkids and grandkids honoring grandparents!

Books

Mark your calendars for December 2 at 11 am for the annual book talk by proprietor of Boswell Books, Daniel Goldin. At this free, popular event, Daniel discusses the hottest and most recommended books of the season. Daniel includes both fiction and nonfiction books. He features award-winners and books recommended by his staff. What’s more, Boswell gives a portion of their sales to the Friends of the Shorewood Library, so your purchases, for gifts or for yourself, support the library.

The Friends hope to see you at the library this holiday season, and hope you'll consider supporting the library with your gift-giving, too.
