Looking for something new or different to listen to? Well, look no further than the Shorewood Library! Thanks to Eddie, one of our clerks, we’ve pulled four new hot albums worth giving a spin.
What do bass lines, pianos, banjos, hand claps, whistles, and Baraboo, Wisconsin have in common? Phox: an enigmatic folk, soul, and rock sextet straight from the heart of the Midwest. Their first album, Phox, features twelve tracks with a steady tempo, atmospheric effects, and multiple layers of timbre. After living together for two years, their twang has blended into an exquisite sound, and while you may not always understand the lyrics, the melodies are like a breath of fresh air.
Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch by Dr. John
True to his New Orleans roots, Dr. John’s Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch plays tribute to one of jazz’s finest trumpeters and vocalist: Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong. Expanding horizons beyond their first two albums American Specialties (2011) and Light Up Gold (2012), Parquet Courts’ Sunbathing Animal (2014) reaches a new level of maturity in energy and melody. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Parquet Courts thirteen track album features sounds reminiscent of Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, and Cake with aural simplicity combined with precision and structure. This alternative punk/indie group will be sure to keep you kicking, and Sunbathing Animal is catchy from beginning to end.
Pinata by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib
Freddie Gibbs and Madlib’s Pinata can be simply summarized as hip-hop at its best. Madlib provides the beats and Freddie Gibbs contributes the rap with seventeen unique tracks, each song good in its own way. Like most culminating efforts, this is a compilation at its finest as Madlib and Gibbs feature other prominent artists such as Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, and BJ the Chicago Kid. Simply hardcore yet topped with gangster quality, Pinata is an intricate, consistent album you will not be disappointed with.
