Despite having only 28 days, February usually feels like the longest month. A blizzard followed by a bout of Arctic cold is enough to send us all into a serious state of the winter doldrums. Snap out of it with some new releases that will have you laughing out loud.
The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Who Got Trapped in the Ikea Wardrobe by Romain Puertolas
Besides having a fantastic title, this novel delivers a humorous tale. The fakir, a con-artist newly arrived from India, has one goal when he gets to Paris: make it to Ikea. He gets there, but has to hide - and chooses a wardrobe. Which then gets shipped out of town, sending him on a hilarious journey across Europe, pursued by a taxi driver seeking revenge. The fakir finds friends of all stripes, whose presence adds to the haphazard hilarity of this one-of-a-kind adventure story. If you like films by Wes Anderson, this is a sure bet to have you laughing.
That's THE David Duchovny, of X-Files and Californication fame - among other things. The dry wit you see in Duchovny's screen presence is here in this fable about a cow who decides to escape her fate. Curious Elsie happens to see the farmer and his family watching a TV show about industrial farming and is inspired to get out while she can. She takes along a turkey and a pig for good measure and their story of liberation begins. For vegetarians/vegans - and those of us looking for a little something politically stirring with our humor.
Debut novelist Noxon takes us to L.A., to tell a story of a dude who's feeling just a little insecure about the role he plays in his marriage. His wife's career in television suddenly skyrockets when her latest attempt at a TV show takes off, winning her an Emmy and forcing her into the mad rush of fame. He soon finds himself a member of the Plus One club of men who are married to successful show-biz women. This humorous look at today's Hollywood - in which women are gaining more and more recognition, and money - is hilarious as much as it is a serious look at the issues of roles in contemporary marriages.
At first glance, a story of a woman suffering from postpartum depression should not be on a list of funny books. But Albert's story is really about female friendships and the ways in which women bond over motherhood among other shared experiences. Ari is pulled from her loneliness by Mina, a new mother who seems to have it much more together than her. This irreverently funny story of Ari and Mina's journey to finding who they are now that they are mothers will probably have you laughing through some tears as many feel-good comedies do.
