The French phrase en plein air refers to a style of painting done outdoors - but next week's Plein Air Shorewood culminates indoors right here at the library. We are excited to be part of the Plein Air Shorewood headquarters once again this year. What does this mean for you?
Beginning early next week, the library will undergo a transformation to accommodate displaying all the artwork created during the three days of painting (Wed. Sept. 17 - Fri. Sept. 19). You will still be able to access all the resources you need, but the library may be a little less quiet than usual.
Don't hesitate to speak to staff if you're concerned, but know that creating an art gallery is not a silent business. Art is noisy - but we assure you that the final result will be worth it.!
Gallery Day
Saturday, September 20 is when the art finds its temporary home on display all over the library. If you stop by anytime during our regular hours, you can browse the artwork. Additionally, the festival is hosting a Collectors' Sale & Sneak Peek from 10-noon Saturday morning, during which time the art is for sale for its full asking price. Following the Collectors' Sale, there will be an hour of family-friendly preview that we suggest as a good time to bring your kids to view the newly-created artwork.
The jury for the festival will be wandering through the library all afternoon to judge the pieces for the awards to be given out Saturday evening.
Gala Evening
On Saturday evening, the library hosts the silent auction and gala. Along with many other sponsors, the Friends of the Library have contributed to the evening by providing dessert. There will also be a cash bar, staffed by volunteers - including experienced bartenders from Three Lions.
The centerpiece of the evening, though, is the silent auction. You can bid on any of the paintings completed during the three and a half days of painting - both longer projects and quick paints.
The library will return to as close to normal as possible for our Sunday hours on September 21.
All Plein Air events are free and open to the public - aside from the Artist & Community dinner at Hubbard Park Lodge which is $10 - so we hope to see you.
