Unattended Children
Responsibility for the welfare and the behavior of children using the library rests with the parent, guardian or responsible caregiver. Though staff will always respond with care and concern, they cannot assume responsibility for children's safety and comfort.
In order to provide for the general safety of children using the Shorewood Library, prevent undue disruption of normal library activities, and to accommodate the general welfare of all persons using the library, the Board of Trustees has approved the following rules and regulations:
- Children six years of age or younger shall be in sight of and supervised by a parent, guardian or responsible caregiver. Parents or caregivers of children six years or younger shall remain in the building while their children are attending library programs.
- Children seven years of age and older who are able to maintain proper library behavior may use the library unattended. If they are not able to maintain proper behavior, they must be supervised by a parent, guardian or responsible caregiver. Proper library behavior is defined in the Library Code of Conduct, which is posted at the Library entrance, on our web page and at each library service point.
- The uncontrolled crying of a child is unacceptable in a library setting. The responsible adult is expected to calm the child in the lobby or outside the building.
- If an unattended child remains in the library at closing time, a staff member will attempt to make contact with a parent or guardian. Two staff members will remain with the child until a parent or guardian arrives up to 15 minutes after closing time, at which time they will contact the Shorewood Police Department to safely transport the child to the Police Department.
