The Shorewood Public Library holds a special place in the hearts of many people in our community.
Read how the family and friends of one library supporter honored her memory in this story shared by Jeannee Sacken, Friends of the Library Secretary and incoming President.
"My good friend, Vikki, loved books, and she loved the library. When she died unexpectedly, she belonged to five book clubs, including the library's Thursday morning club, and she was a member of the board of the Friends of the Shorewood Library. Vikki also had an amazing collection of folk art--wood carvings large and small, mobiles, whirligigs, just to name some.
After Vikki's death, her son, Scott, and his wife, Kristen, asked me for ideas about what to do with all the folk art. Together, we came up with the idea of having a party celebrating Vikki's life. We'd invite all the members of her book clubs, the Library Board, and Friends Board to my house and give them the opportunity to purchase the artwork, with all proceeds going to the Friends to fund a collection of books in Vikki's name. We held the party on a cold and icy March afternoon, but no matter. Eighty people turned out. Vikki's folk art was displayed throughout the first floor of my house. We enjoyed wonderful food and celebrated the life of a great reader and a great friend. In the process, we raised $1,100 to buy books in Vikki's name for her beloved library.
This generous donation came to the Friends of the Library. Jeannee will work with Shorewood librarians to purchase books that are in the genres Vikki liked to read—mysteries, women’s fiction and classics such as Jane Austen Emily Bronte and Willa Cather. Each new book will feature a bookplate honoring Vikki and the gift made in her honor."
