Introducing the Shorewood Monarch Project.
A multi-generational undertaking, the Monarch Project got started this winter with work to get Atwater Bluff certified as a Monarch Waystation. Now, the project team - made up of representatives from the Library, Village and Senior Resource Center, with help from Shorewood School District - has been working to promote habitat support for Monarchs throughout the community.
Last week, we wrapped up a three-part series on pollinators (including What's the Buzz? on May 18, and The Marvelous Monarch on May 23) with a visit from John and Martha Lunz, of the North Milwaukee Chapter of Wild Ones. They worked with children's librarian Heide and Senior Resource Center program director Elizabeth Price to teach participants about butterfly-friendly backyard plants, and help folks plant their own take-home butterfly garden.
The Monarch Project team also worked with Shorewood's schools this spring to spread the word via our human pollinators: kids! Come in to check out some Monarch public service announcements produced by Atwater School students.
Next up for the Monarch Project: we'll launch our annual summer project of nurturing Monarchs at the library. Watch the caterpillars progress through metamorphosis into butterflies at the library and on our Facebook page and Twitter feed.
