CANCELLED Witness to PEPFAR: An American Foreign Aid Success Story

Monday, March 9

6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

Lifesaving HIV medications first became available to Africans in 2003 as the result of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).  Since 2004, Dr. Ian Gilson volunteered his skills and experience to assist health care workers in Kenya and Uganda to acquire the expertise required to use HIV medications effectively.  During his most recent visit, Dr. Gilson was able to witness the dramatic transformation of HIV in Africa from a death sentence to a chronic and survivable condition, due largely to the drugs provided by PEPFAR and the World Health Organization.  PEPFAR is an unprecedented American public health and foreign aid success which we as Americans can all be proud of.  Dr. Gilson will relate stories of the heroic doctors and nurses as well as individuals with HIV infection, who have turned this deadly disease around, and who continue to do truly inspiring work every day.

Dr. Ian Gilson practices internal medicine and primary care with Froedtert Community Physicians.  Since 1985, he has treated patients with HIV and AIDS as part of his medical practice.  Since 2008, Dr. Gilson has been a volunteer speaker at an annual HIV training conference in Uganda put on by the Joint Clinical Research Center (JCRC), the first country wide clinical network to carry out a large-scale HIV treatment program in Africa.
