Lake Bluff and the Smithsonian Celebrate 250 Grand Opening

Thursday, June 4

11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Location: Village Center Meeting Room

Lake Bluff sixth graders participated in a virtual exchange program through the Smithsonian Democracy in Dialogue Virtual Exchange Initiative.

SISTER QUILT PROJECT

Some students connected with a partner classroom in Hawaii where they learned about seen and unseen communities. They defined what underserved and marginalized meant; the important values they hold; and how these communities have participated in American democracy. They represented this learning through co-creating sister quilts that will be showcased in Wisconsin as well as Hawaii.

MURAL PROJECT

The other group of students connected with a partner classroom in Virginia. They critically analyzed some of our most celebrated American stories throughout the past 250 years to uncover new perspectives. They highlighted the key values that we can learn from to contribute to our next 250 years. They are creating a sister mural representing this learning here and in Virginia.

GRAND OPENING

Lake Bluff students will take a walking field trip to the library so that all students can participate in authentic learning and community engagement. They will debut the pieces of art as well as ask community members to reflect on their own key values to a community created project.
