Summer Tails & Tales@Shorewood Library

Posted Jun 11, 2021

Summer is here! The old song promises “Summertime and the living is easy.” After a very challenging 16 months, we all hope that is true. Shorewood Library is doing what it can to make summer easy and fun for your family.

Of course, we want to keep kids reading and learning all summer but we don’t want it to be a chore for them or for you. Our summer reading programs are designed to be flexible. We offer programs for pre-readers, independent readers and teens. We don’t tell kids what or how much they should read. We let independent readers set their own reading goals and track books or pages read. We encourage them to read books they will enjoy. They may also complete fun age-appropriate learning activities that complement their reading.

The emphasis on reading for pleasure doesn’t mean our reading programs are all fun and games. Research shows that reading programs that allow children to choose their own books and develop their individual interests are most likely to have a positive effect on reading skills and feelings about reading.

We also want it to be easy to register for our reading programs. We know people have different comfort levels in public spaces right now so we offer multiple registration options.  You can register in-person at the library and track reading in a printed folder, register and track reading online at www.shorewoodlibrary.beanstack.org , register over the phone and get reading materials through our curbside pickup service, or combine elements of the options for your own hybrid version. Learn more about the Summer Reading here.

Our programs will also be offered in a variety of formats. Our popular “Take & Make” kits for families, children, tweens, teens, and adults will be available to pick up in the library or through our curbside service. We will continue virtual Rhyme Time Tuesdays on Facebook. In-person Thursday morning storytimes, Stretch with a Story, and Terrific Tuesdays will take place outside on the west lawn. If the weather isn’t conducive to outdoor fun, events will be moved indoors to the Village Center with a limited, distanced in-person audience and also be presented on Facebook Live. Featured performers include KidsPlay Theater, Magic of Glen Gerard, The Milwaukee Flyers Tumbling Team, and the Milwaukee Dog Training Club. See the complete schedule of our Summer Events here.

We saved the best for last. After missing a year due to the pandemic, our annual Summer Celebration returns August 5 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.. All of your favorites will be back – Culvers’ sundae bar, trolley rides, music of Frogwater, the Milwaukee Brewers Famous Racing Sausages, balloons, games and more. We will have current health and safety protocols in place.

We wish everyone a healthy, safe, and easy summer! We look forward to connecting with you whether that’s in-person, over the phone or virtually.
